An evening in front of the TV became a landmark for entrepreneur and designer Johanna Topooco. She worked for a long period of time on her dream of creating a unique children's clothing brand, but unfortunately lacked capital to kick-start the project. Through a couple of Danish TV programs Johanna learned about Mikkeller’s founder Mikkel Borg Bjergsø, and was instantly impressed by his driving force and ideals.
“Mikkel’s drive and ambitious approach to what he believes in made an impression. It was really important for me to find a partner in WAWA that understood the concept of the brand, and one who could lift WAWA even further through their personality and experience in the business”, Johanna Topooco tells, who then took the chance and contacted Mikkel.
He fell for the designer’s enthusiasm and drive, and after a series of meetings and the Topooco’s ongoing development of WAWA, Mikkel agreed to partner up.
“It was obvious to me that Johanna is extremely dedicated and keen on making WAWA a success. She has a rare commitment to the project, the clothes are beautifully designed, the products are high quality, and the ideals behind are very compassionate,” explains Mikkel Borg Bjergsø.
Clean and simple products
Johanna Topooco lives in Copenhagen with her Danish husband and their two children. She is daughter of a Swedish mother and a Bolivian father, and has found inspiration in both of these cultures for her sustainable clothing design.
“I have had access to two very beautiful worlds that are very contrasting. The interaction between them requires a good understanding of their differences, and the importance of protecting their shared natural resources,” explains the designer, who longed for a clothing brand for her own son as he grew older.
“I really wanted to continue to buy sustainable products with nice design, but the choices were very limited and still is today. Many of us want our small children to have healthy and sustainable products, but as they grow older the range of offers doesn’t follow the same scale.
WAWA means ‘Child’ in Aymara - an Indian language, spoken in Bolivia and Peru. The name is also part of Johanna Topooco’s middle name, Warawara Wawa, meaning ‘Star Child’.
The clothes are made for children between the ages of 3 and 8 and are produced with one of the textile industries strictest environmental certificates, GOTS, which stands for ‘Global Organic Textile Standard. This certification guarantees strict regulations in relations to the use of chemicals, recycling, and waste separation throughout the entire production.
Johanna Topooco also missed a clothing brand that was simple enough to let a child's personality shine through.
“In the Nordic region we have many nice adult clothing brands with simple designs that add value to the product, but this is something that is lacking in the children's clothing market. Why should it be so hard to find a single-color high quality T-shirt, without print in a beautiful color?, Johanna explains.
“With WAWA, we let sustainability and beautiful design go hand in hand. We make clean, beautiful, and valuable products for the new generation”.
In addition to Johanna Topooco and Mikkel Borg Bjergsø, photographer Amanda Hestehave and Mikkel’s spouse Pernille Pang are also partners in WAWA. Hestehave contributes with her expertise in photography and her knowledge of the brand, while Pernille Pang, who is the PR- and Design Manager of Mikkeller, takes care of public relations.
