Mikkeller announces beer festival in Tokyo

The world-renowned Danish craft brewery Mikkeller, will take its beer festival Mikkeller Beer Celebration to Tokyo later this year.

Once a year, some of the world’s best and most innovative craft breweries from across the world, gather in Copenhagen for the Danish brewery Mikkeller’s festival Mikkeller Beer Celebration Copenhagen (MBCC). The festival is the highlight of the year for the internationally acclaimed Danish brewery, which is known not only for its beer, but also for bars, restaurants, a music festival and a worldwide running club.

For the last couple of years, the festival has also taken place in Boston, but this year - on September 23th and 24th - the festival will be held in Tokyo for the first time at a baseball field in the middle of the city.

“We really think that Mikkeller Beer Celebration is the best beer festival in the world, and we want to bring it to other parts of the world and share it with new people. At the same time Tokyo is one of my favorite cities in the world, and I can’t wait to show it to all of my friends from the beer world”, says Mikkel Borg Bjergsø, founder and CEO of Mikkeller.

Beer from all over the world

40 breweries from Asia, Europe and USA will participate in the festival, and as always they will bring their most exclusive beers. This festival stands out from other festivals, because the head brewers from all the breweries are actually the ones, who are pouring the beer to all the guests.

“Right from the festival’s very beginning, we have insisted that the brewers participate in the festival and not just send a representative. This has contributed to the high standard and its high reputation in the beer world”, explains Bjergsø.

Mikkeller already runs a bar in Tokyo and as the craft beer culture in the city is growing fast, it seems like the perfect time to bring the whole craft beer world to Japan.

“I want to connect the Japanese beer scene more deeply to what is happening in the rest of the world. I want people here to get to taste what I get to taste when I travel. And I want them to meet all the awesome people, who make those beers”, says Hamilton Shields, who is the manager and co-owner of Mikkeller Bar Tokyo.

Besides beer Mikkeller Beer Celebration also focuses on the interaction between food and beer and the festival organizers are working on gathering some really interesting gastronomic profiles from Tokyo and Copenhagen as well for the festival.

“I think Mikkeller Beer Celebration Tokyo will leave the folks who come to drink beer inspired by what the best in the world are doing, and I think the best brewers in the world will be inspired by the flavors and the people in Tokyo. And it will be a sick party,” says Hamilton Shields.
