Mikkeller opens bar in cultural heritage hot spot of Singapore
The brewery’s new Singapore location is a hawker stall at the city’s bustling Chinatown Complex Food Centre. The bars wide range of craft beer will be a perfect addition to the 260 food stalls and shops.
Singapore's hawker culture is a source of pride for Singapore and Singaporeans, and reflects the republic’s living heritage and unique multiculturalism. Just recently it was added to Unesco’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, which emphasizes the distinctiveness of Mikkeller’s new Singapore location at the famous Hawker fare at Chinatown Complex Food Centre.
“I am excited for Mikkeller to open up at this unique location in Singapore and to work with our new great partner to bring our beers to the local people. Hawker stalls and street food is a part of Asian culture that I really love. It is a fun new environment for us, and will be a good addition to our other locations in South East Asia,” says Mikkel Bjergsø, Mikkeller’s Founder and Chief Creative Officer.
Mikkeller also operate bars in Bangkok, Tokyo and Seoul and will soon open its second location in Shanghai.
On the lookout
The new Mikkeller location in Smith Street will open in collaboration with SST Trading Co., a craft beer distribution company founded by beer industry veterans Kuok Meng Chao and Daniel Goh. The beer loving Singaporean duo has previously run a craft beer bar, Smith Street Taps & Friends, at the same location, but jumped at the possibility to work with Mikkeller.
“We are happy that the stall remains a place for people to discover and enjoy well-crafted beers, and we are excited to be working with Mikkeller, a brewery known for its experimental and novel brews, with the added bonus of Chinatown’s famed hawker fare,” says Kuok.
The General Manager of Mikkeller Bar Singapore is Sylvester Fedor, who has previously worked as the Group Manager of Mikkeller Bangkok, adds:“I’m positive that the customers at this famous hawker fare will love the concept, and we will be on the lookout for another space to continue growing Mikkeller’s brand in Singapore.”
The small bar has 10 beers on tap, as well as a curated list of packaged Mikkeller beers alongside international and local breweries.
