Ivan Ramen's story

Ivan Orkins journey into the Japanese culinary world started when he was
15 years old and got a job as a dishwasher at sushi bar.

He fell in love with Japanese language and culture and later decided to study Japanese at the University of Colorado.

In the 1980s he moved to Japan and married a Japanese woman before moving back to the States in 1990 where he finished an education at The Culinary Institute of America. His son was born, but a few years later his wife Tamie got sick and passed away in 1998.

On a trip back to Japan, Orkin met his new wife, and together they returned to live in Japan in 2003. Three years later, he finally found a way to combine his love for food with his love for Japan and he decided to open a Ramen bar in Tokyo.

He not only succeeded, but his restaurant became one of the top ramen shops in Tokyo, an unheard of accomplishment for a foreigner.

In 2010, the ramen chef opened another restaurant in Tokyo before returning to his home country with his wife. In 2013 he opened the Ivan Ramen Slurp Shop in New York, then published the cook book 'Ivan Ramen' and shortly after, opened the doors to his second NYC restaurant, the flagship shop "Ivan Ramen" on Clinton Street.
